Karen Veck

 

Originally from Hampshire Karen now works from her studio on the edge of the Somerset Levels. 

Her current textile art takes inspiration from the beautiful South West coast and landscape.

Karen works with fabric, paint, hand and machine embroidery and embellishments
Recently Karen's work has been selected for Ilminster Art Centre Open Exhibition 2024 and textile-art based exhibitions Moral Fibre (2024) and Contexture (2025) at The House of Smalls Art Gallery, Edinburgh.

The different fabrics we wear and use reflect the lives we lead. From bridal silk to utility scrim, cotton, velvet and lace, overlapping, frayed bound together with golden pathways.

Soft as Velvet, Hard as Nails                         Strips of  white silk velvet interwoven with steel nails. This piece represents the juxtaposition of the perception and the reality of womanhood. A linen warp represents strength.

Woven samples - cotton yarn painted after weaving.
Woven cushions - strips of sari silk, leather and cotton yarn, trimmed with velvet pom poms backed with coordinating velvet.

Embroidery

Machine and hand embroidery on painted fabric embellished with beads, sequins and copper.
